Seal hunting is allowed in Sweden, but selling seal products is currently forbidden by an EU ban. This ban makes it harder for Sweden to manage its growing seal population effectively.

Proposals & Debate

During the 2023 general motion period, members of parliament submitted around 100 proposals on trade, including calls to lift the EU ban on seal products. The main proposal that gained support was to ask the government to work for an exception or a complete repeal of this ban, as it complicates the management of Sweden's increasing seal population. Other proposals related to international trade and the EU internal market were not approved.

The Decision

The Swedish Parliament decided to formally ask the government to actively work within the EU to either get an exception for or completely lift the ban on trading seal products. This means the government will now advocate for this change at the EU level.
