Background & Purpose
Building wind power often leads to local debate, and there has been a need to create better conditions for those living in the immediate vicinity of these large installations.
The Decision
The Swedish Parliament decided that people living near wind farms will receive financial compensation from the power companies, and that this money will be tax-free for private homeowners.
Does this affect you?
- Homeowners near wind farms: They receive a direct financial payment from the wind power operator, which helps compensate for the proximity to the turbines.
- Wind power operators: They are legally required to pay a portion of their annual revenue to nearby residents based on the distance to the turbines.
In Practice
- Homeowners living within a distance of nine times the height of the wind turbines will be eligible for compensation.
- The amount of money received will be higher the closer the house is located to the wind farm.
- The compensation is paid directly by the company operating the wind farm.
- The money received for a private home will not be taxed.
