Background & Purpose

Previously, different defense agencies in Sweden had different rules for environmental permits and safety checks. To make things simpler and more consistent, the government wanted to put the defense research agency under the same system as the rest of the military.

The Decision

The Swedish parliament decided that the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) must follow the same rules as other defense authorities when it comes to environmental permits, radiation safety, and food inspections.

Does this affect you?

  • Researchers and staff at FOI: They will have to adapt to the same environmental, health, and radiation safety standards as the Swedish Armed Forces.
  • Environmental and safety inspectors: They will use a single, unified set of rules when checking and supervising different Swedish defense agencies.

In Practice

  • FOI will apply for environmental permits under the same simplified defense framework as the Swedish Armed Forces.
  • Supervision of FOI's laboratories and facilities regarding radiation and health safety will be coordinated with other military sites.
  • Food safety inspections at FOI facilities will follow the standard defense sector guidelines.
  • The changes will make it easier for authorities to inspect and regulate all defense-related activities in Sweden in a uniform way.
