Background & Purpose
There is a need to address security threats and human rights violations linked to foreign state actors, prompting calls for stricter international measures.
Proposals & Debate
During the general motion period, around 100 proposals were submitted regarding human rights. At the same time, the committee proposed that Sweden actively push within the European Union to classify the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
The Decision
Parliament voted to urge the government to work for an EU terrorist listing of the Revolutionary Guard, while saying no to all other submitted proposals.
Does this affect you?
- Diplomats and government officials: Must actively raise the issue of the terrorist listing in discussions with other EU countries.
- Iranian opposition and diaspora: Affected by Sweden taking a stronger diplomatic stance against the regime's security apparatus.
In Practice
- The Swedish government must actively work within the EU to gather support for the terror listing.
- Diplomatic channels are used to influence other member states.
- All other submitted proposals on human rights from the motion period were dismissed.
