The government proposed making it illegal for cousins to marry each other, as well as closing loopholes allowing certain other close relatives to tie the knot. The plans also include refusing to recognize foreign cousin marriages in Sweden.
The Decision
The Swedish parliament approved the government's proposal, making it illegal to marry cousins and certain other close relatives starting July 1, 2026.
