Background & Purpose

Since 2006, anyone wanting to practice driving privately has been required to attend an introductory course. The government concluded that the course did not achieve its goal of improving the quality or structure of private driving practice.

The Decision

The parliament voted to remove the requirement for the introductory course, meaning it will no longer be mandatory for students and supervisors to attend it.

  • Learner drivers: Individuals planning to get a B-license can start their private driving practice sooner without the need to attend the previously mandatory course.
  • Private driving supervisors: People who intend to supervise a learner driver no longer need to complete the introductory training to be eligible for the role.

  • You will no longer need to book or attend an introductory course to start private driving practice.
  • The cost and time associated with the mandatory course will be removed for all new learner drivers.
  • Private driving practice can begin without prior administrative approval of a course.
  • The change takes full effect on August 1, 2026.
