State budget expenses are grouped into 27 different categories called expenditure areas. The government wanted to change which category handles the funding for security-enhancing measures aimed at civil society organizations.

Proposals & Debate

The government proposed shifting the financial accounting of these security grants from expenditure area 1 (Governance of the Realm) to expenditure area 17 (Culture, Media, Religious Communities, and Leisure). The parliament examined the setup and concluded there was not enough justification to make the switch.

The Decision

The Swedish parliament voted to reject the government's proposal to move the money, meaning the funds will remain under their original category.
