Background & Purpose

The ongoing threat of terrorism and violent extremism in society leads to continuous discussions and proposals on how to best prevent and combat it.

Proposals & Debate

Opposition parties had put forward around 20 proposals (motions) during 2022. These suggestions covered various aspects, including ways to prevent terrorism, how violent extremist groups operate, and stopping the funding of terrorist activities.

The Decision

The Swedish Parliament decided to reject all these proposals from the opposition. This means no new laws or measures based on these specific suggestions will be implemented at this time.

Does this affect you?

  • Swedish citizens: Will not see immediate changes based on these specific proposals, as existing anti-terrorism efforts continue.
  • Law enforcement and security agencies: Will continue their work under current laws and ongoing government initiatives, without new mandates from these rejected proposals.
  • Organizations working against extremism: Will continue their activities within the existing legal framework, as no new preventive measures from these proposals were adopted.

In Practice

  • No new specific laws or measures from these proposals will be introduced.
  • The Swedish Government and relevant authorities will continue their current work to combat terrorism.
  • Existing laws and strategies for preventing and fighting terrorism remain in place.
  • Discussions and investigations into further anti-terrorism measures will proceed as planned by the government.
