Background & Purpose
The government is currently reviewing the entire gun legislation to ensure it is modern and effective. Because this work is already underway, the parliament does not want to make piecemeal changes based on individual proposals.
Proposals & Debate
Opposition parties submitted around 30 proposals during the autumn of 2025. These covered topics like how to judge if a person is suitable to own a gun, how to speed up the process for getting a gun license, and whether to introduce new periods of gun amnesty.
The Decision
The parliament decided to say no to all the opposition's proposals. Instead, they will wait for the results of the comprehensive government investigation that started in 2022.
Does this affect you?
- Licensed gun owners: They will not see any changes to their current license conditions or responsibilities at this time.
- Hunters and sports shooters: The rules governing their activities and equipment remain stable while the investigation proceeds.
In Practice
- Current rules for gun licenses remain exactly as they are today.
- No new gun amnesty programs will be launched as a result of these motions.
- The requirements for proving suitability to own a firearm stay unchanged for now.
- The government's ongoing investigation will continue to be the main focus for future legislative changes.
