Background & Purpose
When Sweden introduces a ten-year primary school, the current school years will shift. This change means that existing teacher certifications need to be updated to match the new grade levels.
The Decision
The parliament approved a new rule that allows the government to adjust or extend teacher qualifications without requiring individual applications to the National Agency for Education.
Does this affect you?
- Teachers and preschool teachers: They will have their professional qualifications updated automatically by the government to align with the new ten-year school structure without extra paperwork.
- School administrators: They will be able to rely on updated, standardized qualification records when hiring staff for the new ten-year school system.
In Practice
- Teacher qualifications will be automatically adjusted to match the new school year structure.
- Teachers will not need to apply to the National Agency for Education to update their credentials for the new system.
- Temporary teaching permissions during the transition period will not necessarily need to be printed on the official teacher license.
- The new rules will be fully integrated by the start of the 2028/29 school year.
