The Decision
The Swedish parliament decided to expand background checks for school staff, meaning more information will be reviewed and certificates will expire faster.
Does this affect you?
- School staff: Teachers and other personnel must provide updated background checks more frequently to keep their positions.
- Job applicants in education: Applicants must ensure they have a fresh background check certificate, no older than six months, to be considered for a role.
- Adult education students: Students in municipal adult education will benefit from the same safety standards as those in primary and secondary schools.

- Background checks will now include information from the suspicion register, not just the criminal record.
- A background check certificate must be no older than six months when shown to an employer.
- Employees must provide a new certificate every six months instead of once a year.
