Background & Purpose

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU activated the mass influx directive. The Swedish government chose to expand the group of people who can receive temporary protection in Sweden beyond the EU's minimum requirements.

Proposals & Debate

The government informed the parliament through an official written communication that the aliens ordinance has been updated. The update gives certain people who were in Sweden before December 22, 2023, the right to temporary protection, provided they have not committed serious crimes.

The Decision

The Swedish parliament received the government's information document and concluded the matter.

Does this affect you?

  • Ukrainian citizens in Sweden: Those who were legally in Sweden before December 22, 2023, can now be granted temporary protection under the expanded rules.
  • Displaced persons: Individuals affected by the crisis in Ukraine who meet the residency timeline gain clearer access to temporary protection status.

In Practice
