Background & Purpose

Some individuals manage to stay out of sight when they are ordered to report to prison, youth homes, or when they are wanted by the court. To stop supporting people who avoid legal consequences, new rules were proposed.

The Decision

The Swedish parliament approved the government's proposal to lower or completely stop social security benefits for individuals who actively avoid being locked up or arrested.

Does this affect you?

  • Fugitives from justice: Individuals who refuse to show up for their prison sentence or youth home placement will lose their social benefits.
  • Authorities handling welfare and justice: Agencies like the Swedish Social Insurance Agency will coordinate with justice authorities to stop payments to wanted individuals.

In Practice

  • Benefits will be reduced or canceled for anyone who is ordered to report to prison or a youth home but stays away.
  • People who are officially wanted and detained while absent will also lose their financial support from the social insurance system.
  • The changes apply starting from July 1, 2025.
